Red Lion Pub, Avebury.
Avebury is a small village known to be 2000 years older than Stonehenge
and has one of the stone circles in it. The pub is 400 years old which
dates back to the early 1600's. It was a farmhouse until 1802 when it
became a coaching inn. Its a thatched cottage with low ceilings, beams and
a large millstone situated in the car park. There are four cottage style
rooms where you can stay over at the pub and be locked in at night, if you
dare.
An old landlady called 'Florrie' lived at the pub with her husband.
Florrie's husband went and fought in the Civil War during the 17th century
and while he was away Florrie got lonely and she got a lover. Florrie's
husband came back one night unannounced and caught them together. He shot
dead the lover and slit Florrie's throat throwing her body down the well
and sealing it in. Florrie is known to visit the toilets, come in and out
of the well in the bar area and she also throws salt and pepper pots
across the bar. If a bearded male visitor comes in the pub Florrie is
known to spin the chandelier as she likes men with beards.
Another owner of the building was murdered by the outlaws he hid in the
pubs cellar as he is known to wander the pub.
In the Avenue bedroom two children sit in the corner looking petrified
while a lady walks round the room unaware of the children. There are cold
spots in the bedrooms.
Staff have reported that items go missing in the pub and return
mysteriously days later.
A horse drawn carriage has been heard outside the pub and people have
heard the horses hooves outside.
Photos greatly received from Lee Price who visited the pub earlier this
year.

The village of Avebury dates back to between 4000 and 2500 BC. It was made up of three stones circles and the Red Lion Inn is right in the middle of one of them. The red Lion dates back to the early 1600’s and was a farm house until 1802, when a license was acquired and it became a coaching inn. Several ghosts have been found to reside in and around the property including a phantom carriage with ghostly horses. However, these have only ever been seen just before the death of close family members.
Florrie the female Phantom
In the 17th century Florrie lived in the house within her husband, but her husband was enlisted in the English Civil War. Whilst he was away she found herself a lover. One night her husband came back unannounced to surprise her and caught her in the arms of her lover. In a fit of rage he shot her lover dead and slit her throat. He then dragged her body to the well, threw her in and sealed it with a huge boulder. Since this time Florrie’s ghosts has been seen leaving the well and entering it.
Once the house was made an Inn a room was built around the well, which now has a glass top and is used as a viewing point and also a table.
Bearded customers have always attracted the attention of Florrie could this be because he husband or her lover had a beard? On one occasion several customers were alarmed when a chandelier in the Inn started spinning really quickly, when the Landlord came out to check what was happening he saw that there was a man with a really bushy beard beneath it.
The Avenue Bedroom
In this room there have been several sightings of two children cowering in the corner. At the opposite end of the room there has also been a ghostly woman seen sitting at a writing table either oblivious or not at all concerned about the children’s obvious distress. Despite the many investigations that have been held here it has never been discovered who the children or the lady are and what they are cowering from.
Strange orbs and cold spots have also been seen/felt throughout the room. Weird shadows have also been seen flickering on the walls.
The Cellar
The cellar is thought to have been the place where a very violent murder happened. A man is thought to have been repeatedly stabbed , it is unknown who this man was or whether he was one of the priests that used to be hided in the cellar in the 17th Century. One man saw the vision of a man approaching him; he was thrusting towards him with a ‘knife’. An angry presence has also been felt of someone who has had their head chopped off. IT is unknown who this man is - I think this is a job for WOLF PR!!
