Elinir Cavendish the Ghost of Newton House, Llandeilo, Camarthenshire

Newton House overlooks the Vale of Tywi, built within Dinefwr Park close to the Dinefwr Castle (which is now ruins).  It was owned and built by the Rice family (who’s name was originally Rhys, but the changed it when the Welsh and English aristocracy merged with the coming of the Tudors).

It was built in the 1660’s by Edward Rice, although the house was ‘modernised’ in Victorian times.

Elinir Cavendish

Elinir Cavendish was the cousin of the Lady of the House in the 1720’s. She was being forced to marry a man that she didn’t love so she ran away to Newton House. Her betrothed was so angry that she rejected him that he followed her to Dinefwr Park and when he caught up with her he murdered her (it is unknown how she died). Her ghost has walked the house ever since.

She was at her most active during the 1980’s when the house was owned by a Television Facilities Company. There was talk of a strange atmosphere and a number of editors fell sick during this time one after the other. This may be a coincidence - what do you think?

During one evening an editor and the director were working in the editorial suite when they saw the ghost of a young woman. She glided across the room and disappeared into a cupboard when the cupboard was searched there was no-one there.

Newton House is now owned by the National Trust and you can now go and have a look at the extensive grounds and also check out the ‘goings on’ with the house.
