Join us for a fantastic evening at the spooky Commandery, known for its rich history of romance, war and tragedy, the Commandery is believed to be haunted by several of it's previous inhabitants.
The Worcester Commandery was the home to the Duke of Hamilton (the Commander of the King's forces) for a short while during the Battle of Worcester. He was taken there with a leg injury. Unfortunately for him, he died from his wounds. It is said he was then buried under the floorboards for some time before he was removed and entombed in Worcester Cathedral.
In recent years, a local man arrived early for a meeting in the Solar part of the Commandery. After some minutes he left in terror not able to explain what he had experienced and vowed never to go into the room again. To this day it is not known what he saw. Other visitors to the Solar room have also felt a strange coldness and an overpowering presence, which remains unexplained. Some say it is the Duke of Hamilton in the throes of his agony.
Spooky happenings are often reported by staff and visitors to the museum and on previous visits our own team have seen and recorded some excellent research material.
In 2004, two skeletons thought to date from medieval times were found underneath the museum. During these times the site would have had a chapel and, it is assumed, a graveyard. It is possible that there are further graves on the site, possibly dating as far back as the foundation of the first chapel, on the site in the Saxon period.
The Commandery is best known for its role in the Civil War as a headquarters and hospital for the Royalist army, which was crushed by the Parliamentarians at the Battle of Worcester in 1651.
