Sukie was a barmaid at the George and the Dragon during the 18th Century she had many admirers within the village including three young men. Sukie apparently wanting to marry someone with money and connection rejected their advances. They got very jealous when they saw that she had her eyes on a young aristocrat, whom she saw as her way out. Soon he was completely in love with her and came round to see her daily.
The three men wrote her a note from the aristocrat saying that he wanted to elope with her. They told her to wear a white dress and meet them within the Hellfire Caves. Arriving at the mouth of the caves, she lit her torch and the young men saw her approaching. As she went passed them they threw her torch to the ground and chased her through the cave. As she rounded the corner she slipped and hit her head on the side of the cave. One of them went to get help and she was carried back to her room at the George and Dragon, where she died in the night.
A few days later, the two maids that she shared a room with saw her appear and refused to enter the room again. She has been seen many times over the centuries, especially walking the corridors in the early hours of the morning.
In 1966 one American visitor to the hotel, woke one night to find a pinpoint light by the door of the room. The light started to grow and took on an opaque quality. As he moved over towards it he felt really cold and was hit with a feeling of dread and despondency. After this the light ballooned and seemed to reach for him. Need less to say he was a little scared!
Heavy footsteps have also been heard coming down the staircase, which was believed to be a traveller murdered in the 18th Century. However, the circumstances surrounding his death have been long forgotten by all of those at the Inn.
Other females have also been seen at various locations but Sukie’s tragedy seems to overshadow all of them!
