Ghosts of Culzean Castle, Ayrshire

Culzean Castle was originally a stronghold built in around 1186 for the Kennedy Clan. The castle as it stands today was built in around 1772, in stages, by David Kennedy the 10th Earl of Cassilis.

The castle has had many famous guests including Dwight Eisenhower, who stayed here briefly during World War Two. After the war ended the Kennedy clan gave the castle to the people stipulating that the apartment at the top of the tower be given to General Eisenhower as a thank you for his help in winning the war.

The Ghostly Piper

A piper has been heard playing in the castle grounds and it is thought this is to celebrate the weddings of clan members. It has been heard playing between the happy valley and the ocean. Apparently it can also be heard on stormy nights.

May Kennedy

May Kennedy from Culzean was kidnapped by Sir John Cathcart who planned to kill her after just murdering his wife. May found out about his plan and pushed him off the cliff near to Carelton Castle. His ghost has been said to haunt Culzean Castle.

The Lady in a Ball Gown

A spirit of a young lady has been said to haunt Culzean, but no-one knows who she is. She has been seen on various occasions walking around the castle.

Misty Figure on the Stairs.

There have been several sightings of a misty figure on the oval staircase, but no-one knows what or who is causing this.
