Chillingham Castle was originally a 12 century stronghold, but it became a fully fortified castle in the 14th century. Over the years many royals have stayed here and the castle has often been used during feuds and battles upon the Northumberland border.
De Gray a Normandy noble established the castle as his family estate and the Grey’s have owned the castle for over 800 years.
Lady Mary Grey now lives here with her husband Sir Humphrey Wakefield.
The Blue Boy
The blue boy has been seen in the pink room. Cries and moans have been heard when the bells of the clock tower chime midnight. The noises came from near to the passage, which had been cut through the wall into the adjoining tower. As the cries died away a bright halo of light would form and a little boy dressed in blue, surrounded by light would approach the bed. During the 1920’s the bones of a very young were found behind the wall along with the fragments of a blue outfit. They were found with the bones of a man (by where the fireplace is now situated). Since the remains have been found the boy has not been seen, however, some people sleeping in the room have seen flashes of light by the fireplace in the middle of the night.
Lady Grey
Lady Mary Berkley was once married to Lord Ford Grey of Wark and Chillingham and the Earl of Tankerville. Her ghost is thought to still be looking for her husband, who ran away with her sister Lady Henrietta. This became a big scandal for the Grey family and a lawsuit took place before the legendary Judge Jefferies.
The lady was left heartbroken and alone with her baby. The rustle of her dress has been heard along the corridors, along with cold chills and a feeling of utter disappointment. It has also been claimed by one nanny and the children in her care that the lady stepped out of her portrait and followed them around the room.
White Pantry Ghost
Within the inner pantry a pale figure dressed in white has been seen. The silver used to be kept within the pantry and footmen used to sleep in here to guard it at night. One night when a footman was just going in there to sleep a woman in white asked him for water. He turned away to get her some and then remembered that he had locked the door after himself and there was no-one in there. When he turned back around she was gone. It is thought that the woman may have been a servant or a visitor to the castle who was poisoned slowly, which is why she wants water.
Ghost in Chamber
Apparently a former chef who worked in the castle committed suicide in this room. Someone can be sensed moving around and chills can be felt within the room, along with the feeling of not being alone. This room is now no longer used after one maid slept in here and in the middle of the night moved to a downstairs sofa because she was that scared!
