During the 12th Century the land once housed a Priory, a church and several caretakers’ buildings.
Borley Manor was registered in the Doomsday Book on this site prior to 1066, so it has been presumed that the church was built around this time. The foundations of the house contained vault rooms and tunnels.
The rectory itself was not built until 1863, when it was built next to Borley church.
The Monk and the Nun
In 1362 Benedictine Monks built a monastery on the site where the rectory now stands. There was a nun from Bores convent which is about 7 miles away from Borley, who fell in love with a monk. They decided to elope, but unbeknown to them the elders of the monastery had found out their plan. They had convinced a friend of the monk to drive the carriage and help them escape.
On the night that they were leaving they got ambushed by the elders who, beheaded the coachmen and hung the monk. The nun was bricked up alive in the vault beneath the rectory and left to die a slow death. Their ghosts have haunted here ever since! Phantom coaches have been seen with the nun entering along with the nun frequenting around the pathway at the back of the house. This then became known as nun’s walk.
The nun appears to have been the most active ghost, as she has been seen looking out of windows within the rectory. In one year she did this so much that they bricked the window up of the dining room!
She has also been seen walking through the wood surrounding the property with a bald man in a black gown (thought to be the monk)
The Ghosts of the Bull’s
The first residents of the house were the Bull’s and various generations of the family lived here for many years. The first Reverend Bull and his predecessor, his son Harry Bull, both died within the blue room and on various occasions their ghosts have been seen in this area, along with various chills and someone has been heard shouting the name Carlos (which was the first Reverend Bull’s nickname).
When the Foysters moved in
Most of the poltergeist phenomena happened when the Foyster’s moved in. There were apparently 2000 poltergeist phenomena within the 5 years that they lived here. The Reverend’s wife Marianne received many notes, which appeared from nowhere.
During this time they described many phenomena including bells ringing, keys going missing. Although the most dangerous paranormal phenomena happened when an iron was thrown across the room!
When the Foyster’s tried to get the house exorcised Marianne was thrown out of bed- not once but three times!!
The fire
The last occupant of the house was a Mr Gregson. And it was burned down after he overturned a gas lamp whilst stocking some bookcases. Witnesses of the blaze reported to have seen many ghosts looking from the windows it was also reported that when Gregson escaped the fire he was accompanied by two people- lady in a grey habit and a bald man wearing a black gown. Could this be the monk and the nun finally leaving the rectory?
Not long after this the rectory was demolished. During the demolition a brick was photographed rising through the rubble on its own.
